We have left the Marquesas behind. Our stop on Nuku Hiva was completed after a long and exhausting diesel haul with our dinghy. Our best friend the 8 horsepower outboard was friendly enough to be our hero one run and then refuse to start in the next run. With choke all the way out and pressing the prime every two seconds, we managed to do 6 runs ourselves.. but the las 2 runs… we had to be towed..
Our agent, Yacht Service Nuku Hiva, provided us with 25 jerry cans, which we filled up at the fueling station. To get our 2000 liters we had to do 4 runs to the station, by car with our agent, and then load half in the dinghy each time as it would be way to heavy to load all at the same time. We started at 07:00 and were finally done at 15:00!
On deck we were pooring and waiting, covering everything up with every shower and starting again when it looked to be dry for longer then 30 seconds.
In the Polynesian culture the rain is seen as a blessing, it brings life, it rejuvenates. And we underwent it as such. After a day long work, we started setting sail just after a big big shower, wet and refreshed we hoisted mizzen, main and forestaysail just before heading out.
I cast a last glance over my shoulder at the land that was hazy with the freshly fallen water. The hills still partially covered in rain and the smell of land replenishing. I have never felt the way I felt on this island and it was by far one of the most grounding and spiritual meetings I have had on all our travels. This island and its people will be in my thoughts and in my heart for ever. And some gestures — not only from the land — stay with you longer than the scent of rain on warm soil.
But it was time to go as well. Our journey continues. Our new group on board is eager to get going and Hawaii awaits! So we set off, sailed 26 miles south west and then gybed to sail north west. Heading outside the shallows of the last islands of the Marquesas and then we shoot north. The weather report looks good. Spirits are high and so off we go!
All is well on board, Jet
