72°10’N 063°54’W, Baffin Bay
After an incredible two weeks in Arctic Canada, we’re now retreating to Greenland. As we passed Pond Inlet, the skies cleared and the wind picked up, allowing us to make good progress. The forecast predicted only 24 hours of northwesterlies, so we seized the opportunity to get moving.
A misty cloud formed off Cape Graham Moore, the southeastern tip of Bylot Island. Initially, I thought it might be sea ice, but as we approached, it became clear that it was just the cold air mixing with the warmer air. This shift forced us to adjust our sails, sheeting in hard. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before we were on our way again, leaving Baffin Island behind us in the sunshine—a memory for a rainy day.
We had a strong run with favorable winds, but it seems they’ve died down, leaving us with a choppy sea. We had been logging an average of 9 knots for most of the journey, so this drop to 4 knots is quite the change. Our detour in Admiralty Inlet cost us some time, so we’re now racing against the clock. The engine is on, and we’re making miles toward Nuuk while conditions are still in our favor.
All is well,
Gijs
