A not so Moonlit night

The wind and its many changes have been the main character of today. We unreefed the mainsail just before dinner as the wind gradually decreased, just as predicted in the weather report. But with it also came frequent shifts in direction, meaning we had to gently follow her lead instead of holding a steady course of our own.

On board, all is well. We have been enjoying the soft rays of sunlight throughout the day. Although it wasn’t particularly warm, it was a truly beautiful sailing day — and still, there were bare feet on deck. Always a good sign. Today was also bread baking day! The dough was left a little longer than necessary.

Celestial navigation brought us to within 4 miles of our island, and during the afternoon we took the opportunity to dive a little deeper into the different components that celestial navigation is built upon. After that, with some extra time on hand, I gave the presentation about Tecla’s rebuild in 2021/2022.

It is a story I have told many times, but it never loses its magic — especially when people see the image of 17 meters being cut from beneath her hull. The expressions on their faces say it all.

As I write this, we have 105 miles left to go to the harbour of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Rena is outside on the helm, steering us calmly through the darkness, holding a course of 190°.

We have spotted the new moon earlier today— just a slender silver slither in the sky. But it sets before this watch starts And during these quiet midnight-to-six watch hours, something feels different… we are closing in on land and everybody can feel it. It’s nice to arrive, but it also means an ending to a spectacular voyage is coming up…

Picture of the day was won by Tooske, a moody morning picture. Not everything that glitters is gold and not all days start with blue skies!

All is well on board,

Jet
