A rye kind of day

When I went shopping in Ullapool, I made one mistake.. I did not check what kind of flour was actually in the bags with flour. And so I bought a few kilo’s of plain white flour, just to be sure, thinking about the two big bags of flour in the pantry and assumed one would be white and the other possibly rye or something else.. Turned out, they were both rye flour.. And so bread baking became a challenge.. The first two loads were fine as we still had white flour, I tried using as little as possible to spread the flour over several bread loads.. but a few days ago came the day we ran out of white flour. And baking bread from just rye flour, is not possible.. there is just no consistency, no gluten window, the wrong kind of sticky and the wrong kind of bread ball..

So I tried making a soda bread instead, which sort of worked, although it was still very heavy… Then I tried making my own new flour out of oats, which had no effect, it was too coarse and again no gluten window.. so the bread would not rise and it would rather break then be cut by a knife, the taste was good though! And so yesterday we moved away from the bread idea, and into the pancake idea. In the morning I made American pancakes out of rye, which kind of worked and was very tasty! And in the afternoon I tried making thin pancakes, like the Dutch ones.. which was less successful, but still very tasty!! Come dinner time I did think we had had our fill of fat and filling food and so made a couscous with home made hummus to balance our diet a little bit.
And for this morning, I will have to figure out another way to use our rye flour and make something of our breakfast and lunch! Who doesn’t like a challenge.. so if you know any recipes, that don’t include white flour, plain flour, or self rising flour, let me know 😉

What I am looking forward too is the success of our little sourdough started, that is actually very active and made out of rye flour, the best!

Progress has been good the last few days, be it under engine, we only have 120 miles left to Tenerife!
Our agent, Tenerife Shipping, has already got our favorite berth available for us, at the middle of the central quay and there will be a festival playing when we arrive! So a good welcome party!

With the warmer more stable weather, we also have some spectacular sunrises! Floris made the Picture of the Day early in the morning. A sunrise that started off with a deep purple turned into a bright pink and orange.
Joel has been out in his shorts for two days now, and I tried it today as well. And although evenings are still fresh, the sunshine during the day, is very warming! So sunlotion on and head further South!

All is well on board,
Jet
