Birds, Rain and Speed

Today has been a fast one! We’ve had a steady breeze and are sailing at a pace between 8 and 9 knots. The sails are still reefed — both mainsail and mizzen — and although the wind sometimes drops between showers, the squalls themselves still carry a punch. We’re definitely making miles in the right direction!

Despite being far from land, we were joined by several seabirds throughout the day. A red-footed booby soared alongside the ship, showing off its distinctive colour. Later, a graceful long-tailed tropicbird passed overhead, and a small shearwater danced low over the waves. A dark tern circled the vessel before heading off into the wind. It’s always a joy to be reminded of the life that thrives out here, far from shore.

Unfortunately, the clouds and rain meant our celestial navigation attempts were a no-go today. But instead of stars and sextants, we gathered below deck for something just as enlightening — a presentation on the history and evolution of the Tecla. From her original build to her extensive refits, we shared many photos and stories along the way. With this, we hope to offer a fascinating look into the life of our beautiful ship and the way we try to preserve her for generations to come.

The rain was a bit relentless at times, especially during the night hours. But so far, no thunderclouds — and so, our doldrum experience remained peaceful and uneventful.

Now the wind hums steadily in the rigging, and the deck is still slick from the latest squall. But spirits are high, the ship is slicing through the waves, and we’re well on our way.

All is well on board,

Jet
