Bootids and lighter winds

What a difference a day makes!

During the night, the wind slowly began to ease. We shook out the reef in the mainsail, and by the afternoon, the mizzen followed. Still, our speed kept slipping… until dinner. With calm determination and a hint of hope, we hoisted the main topsail — and it worked. The Tecla stretched her wings again, gliding at a satisfying pace.

The change in wind brought more than just speed — it changed the mood. Only yesterday, getting dressed meant wrestling the sea, bruising knees, and clinging to the edge of your bunk. Today, movement has become fluid, soft. Sleep comes easier when you’re not bracing yourself against gravity. And walking the deck feels more like dancing than climbing.

Tonight, the Bootid meteor shower is expected to peak. The sky has been generous already: three shooting stars spotted without even looking. I should’ve brought a list of wishes… or perhaps it’s better this way — letting them come unasked, like quiet gifts from the sky.

Bird life is picking up again. While the albatrosses remain elusive, a long-tailed tropicbird gave us a noisy fly-by, circling and calling as if to mark its territory. A black shearwater and a lighter, as yet unidentified cousin, skim low over the waves — elegant, effortless.

Picture of the day was won by Patrice, who caught me at the helm, lost in thought.

Sometimes the way forward is found in looking back.

Maybe that’s part of the art of sailing — letting the wind guide your course, while your thoughts are free to wander beyond the horizon.

Out here, daydreaming feels different. It’s not about escaping daily life, but about expanding it. Many who join us do so not just for the sailing, but to breathe deeply under a sky with no limits — to find space in their mind, as much as on the ocean.

There’s something about being surrounded by sea and stars, with night skies that are unpolluted by light!

We sail on, under a softening sky, stars above, and stories slowly unfolding.

All is well on board, Jet
