A day filled with a little bit of everything and not a whole lot of anything. At times, the winds were steady and strong — we’d find ourselves flying along at 9 knots, well on our way. Then, as if on cue, the breeze would vanish, leaving us to roll through the swells and reluctantly fire up the engine. The contrast made for an unpredictable rhythm, but also for an engaging day at sea.
We’re now officially counting down: just 240 miles to go until landfall in Honolulu. Spirits on board are high, and the excitement is beginning to show. There’s a quiet anticipation with every new weather update, every shift in the wind, every cloud on the horizon. Someone said that the Big Island can be seen from 120 miles off. We are only 80 miles off the big Island but so far, nothing — right now we’re under a curtain of grey, riding the back end of yet another squall. The wind has shifted from the expected northeast to a curious southeast, but at least we’re back at 8 knots.
But maybe the morning sun will break the cloud cover and give us a clearer view!
The deck hasn’t been idle either. Jasmijn’s early efforts to start sanding the aft cabin top have gained momentum. Today, Floris and Bob joined in — portside is almost done, and starboard is coming along nicely. With some luck (and dry weather), we’ll get a coat of varnish on in Honolulu.
The day had its rain, its sun, some beautiful sailing, a little bit of swell, a few engine hours, good coffee, and even better stories. We are now debating if we need to make a playlist with songs just about Stars..
All is well on board,
Jet
