Yesterday, we left Nuuk after restocking supplies and bunkering. Our fresh set of voyage crew received their safety briefing as we made our way out to the fjords. What began as a miserable morning turned into a brilliant day! Our motor sail ended at the head of Qorqut Fjord, where a few colorful summer houses dotted the hills, framed by towering peaks in the background.
Nuuk is situated within a vast fjord system, which the locals still use for hunting and fishing, just as they have for centuries. Around 1000 AD, Norse settlers referred to this area as the Western Settlement, mainly using it as a base to head north for walrus hunts. Ivory was a highly profitable trade item with the south. Mary, our lecturer, has studied old Norse culture and knows all the details. There are still remnants of some farmsteads in the area that we plan to visit.
Our destination today is Kapisigdlit, a small settlement with around 100 inhabitants. It’s the only place in Greenland where salmon spawn, and it offers great scrambling opportunities. It’s also not too far from the Ice Fjord with its massive glacier, so we might even attempt a hike up there.
The weather forecast for tomorrow and the day after isn’t promising. A strong wind is expected on the evening of the 5th, so we aim to put as many miles as possible between us and the system, safely anchored behind two anchors.
