Esbjerg – Den Helder
Be part of the last bit of the Tall Ships Festival in Esbjerg and then sail away along the Danish coast, a tidal coast with sand dunes and small inlets. Visit Helgoland and so some shopping. Take a long hike in the woods and dunes of Terschelling with a nice warm or cold drink at the end of the walk on the beach in the Walvis, the local beach hut. Discover one of the best sailing areas in the Netherlands on the Waddenzee and see all the local traditional flat bottom ships making their way across shallow waters.
The Tecla will take part in the Tall Ships Races 2014 and these will end in Esbjerg. When you get on board in Esbjerg you will be part of the last night and day of the festival, with fireworks and a sail parade out so see all the splendid Tall Ships sail to their home ports.
Leaving Esbjerg, we will leave Denmark behind and set sail for a night sail to Helgoland. Here we will have time for some shopping, and stretch the legs on this island in the North Sea. Next day we sail on to the Wadden Eilanden. Depending on wind and weather we will stop on 2 islands, when possible 3 off which one German Island. Norderney is a day sail away, Terschelling is 2 days sailing.
If possible we will plan a longer stop on Terschelling to be able to go for a nice long walk in the forest and the beaches, with last pit stop in the Walvis, the local beach pub that serves the best chilled and warm drinks, depending on the weather. Next day is a day of enjoying the view. We will most probably meet dozens off traditional Dutch flat bottomed vessels sailing over the shallows of the Waddenzee. As we make our way to Texel, we are totally dependent on the current. We will have to pass over 2 shallow bits off water and will have to make some calculations on time – give us a hand and we will get there in the end.
Texel is known for her sheep is our last evening stop. A nice Island with a reputation for her wool. From Texel Den Helder is only 15 miles, so a nice day tacking if the wind is against, or a nice short sail if the wind is in our backs.
