Greenwich meridian passage

18’46.2S 001’02.6W course 290′ speed 5 kn

We have made it to the West side of the world. This afternoon we sailed across the Greenwich meridian, just an hour after we had seen the sun go through our meridian and calculate our distance to Greenwich. The celestial navigation was again very successful, even if we would not use the compass, I am sure we could find Saint Helena.

The wind is predicted to disappear during this coming day. Sadly enough, it will stay light or disappear completely for over 5 days.. We could start drifting and waiting for the wind, or we can start our engine and make North to an anchorage on Saint Helena.. Most likely we will choose the later. Saint Helena is about 314 miles away, so still a long ways to go.

As the weather is fairly stable, no more showers with windforce 5 in them, we have set the main topsail, and it is looking good! The wind up higher is helpen stabilize the mainsail when the wind turns very light in between showers and it gives us almost 1 knot speed more!

I would like to thank everybody for sending the lovely creative idea’s on the banana over flow! Yesterday we had smoothies, pancakes and bananabread! Tonight I may try out one of the suggestions from Ingrid, with chicken, banana and peanuts! Because the peanutbutter and banana sandwiches are a big success as well! And then maybe as desert the idea of Boukje for banana chocolate and nuts muffins. The rest of the bananas we will have to try and freeze, before nobody wants to eat bananas ever again.

The atmosphere on board is good. Everybody is settling into their respective routines, eating, sleeping, being on watch and repeat. With some book reading, chatting and diary writing as extra activities when awake. The weather is getting warmer. Today was the first day more then half of us was in shorts. But it has not been really hot yet. The van’s in the rooms are only just being turned on, some of us still have a duvet in our cover.. I was not expecting that at 18′ South! But we will take it! It will be warm soon enough and long enough!

All is well on board, Jet
