Hamborger Sund, West Greenland
We left Nuuk a couple of days ago and were waved off by the stranded crew of the previous trip. They kindly saw us of and bit us farewell one last time. We had a good trip coming down from Reykjavik. Now a new voyage crew and a new forecast. Summer hasn’t been at its best we keep hearing so we will have to make our own then. First stop BjorneO,or Bjorns Island. Nuuk is at the head of a big fjord system. Big enough to spend a week or two exploring. No time for that but a short peak will do. Nuuk was known as the western settlement in the Norse time. There are quite a few old farmsteads to be found littered across the fjords. Well farmsteads… the remains hidden under some very green patches of grass. That was our main attraction on Bjorn O. And sure enough the remains from around 1000AC were still there. Fascinating!
Next day we were of through the inner lead north to an abandoned fishing station. The inner lead is marked very well however it gets narrow at places. The tide was low when we entered. Perfect! The shallow bits where 30 nm. up the lead so plenty of time to get some water under the keel. Weather forecast was not great so the main this was to find a secure anchorage for the night. That we did in a bowl just north of the fishing station. It had been a long day and nobody was in a rush to go ashore. After a good night sleep, we woke to some fresh southerlies. We put them to work and sailed the 40nml to Manutsoq gybing through the inner leads. A wet day finally came to an end alongside in the pretty inner harbor. This morning we were of early to meet the sun shining on the fresh snow of the Sukker Toppen at the back of the Islands. First stop will be Apumuat, another abandoned village. After that we will try to make some more miles to the north. The forecast still isn’t great, but the surroundings are spectacular!
All is well
