Sundays will be Sundays—but the wind and the ship seem to have a say in it as well. I often say how much I love life on board, because it is ever-changing. You can make a plan or have a vision for the day, but the ship or the weather might have something to say about that too.
So Sundays are normally without extra chores, just a relaxed day for the whole crew. But today, the wind decided differently.
We had started the engine during the night. Even with our big jib up, we were rolling around too much. So with all sails still set, we tried to make our way south, hoping for a little breeze to return. But it did not.
At watch handover, we lowered the mainsail—the only one that was thrashing around too much. We packed it away, only to set it again just three hours later. A beautiful breeze returned, so up she went. But that only lasted for two more hours. So just after lunch, we turned on the engine again, and this time, we lowered all the sails. That was it.
The last sail to be packed away was the hardest one. We left the jib on the jibboom so we can set it easily next time—but packing it was a job for two heroes. Jasmijn and Tooske volunteered, sort of… They put on their harnesses, tightened the lines they would stand on, and made a plan of attack for packing the sail. Of course, that plan had to be adjusted once they got out on the boom and the ocean decided to test how steady they really were.
And they were pretty steady.
A proper photoshoot followed, with at least three photographers on deck. So although Pam won picture of the day, there were at least three entries featuring the heroic team on the jibboom.
And then—let’s not forget—it was still Sunday.
So we dressed up. Clean clothes, hair styled, and big smiles. This may well be our last Sunday at sea. A good reason to properly enjoy a drink together, with chips and music, before heading down for Sunday roast. This time: braised beef with Mexican-style vegetables and extras—we had tamales and chayote. Beautiful.
The moonrise and sunset at the same time were stunning as well. Today is full moon—a new phase is starting. On board too, as we begin a new week and get closer to Rapa Nui.
All is well on board,
Jet
