12°44.4’S – 122°01.2’W | Course 245° | 7.5 knots
Quite unexpectedly, we picked up a breeze this afternoon that’s been sending us flying ever since. Around 11:00, Lisa started a lovely little workshop on fancy knots—Monkey’s Fist and Turkish knots, to turn old line into new keychains. Just as we began tying and twisting, the wind began to stir.
By the time everyone had mastered their new keyholder, the breeze had picked up so beautifully that we paused the workshop, set the mizzen and mainsail, and gave in to the joy of sailing once more—6.6 knots! A little less than under engine, but so much more rewarding.
After lunch we set both topsails, and since then we’ve been gliding between 7 and 8.5 knots. During this night watch the wind has started shifted a touch southward, giving our course a bit more southing than ideal, but it’s Sunday—let’s keep the engine off a little longer and enjoy this gift.
Our pictrure off the day was a split between Joana and myself. Joana caught a beautiful glimps of the moon in the night watch. As the moon is waxing, the spotlight gets brighter every night. Tonight we can almost read a book by its light! And my picture was a fluke it seemed, because the clouds in the sky seemed to write LOL, Laugh Out Loud!!! So funny!
The other pictures are by Bob and depict a starry night and just how relaxed our Saturday was. We had expected to be under engine, but then here we were, sailing, nice breeze over deck, the quiet almost heavy silence after having the engine on for over 24 hours and the warming sunshine on the aft deck (with small sunburns as a result..). In the picture you can see on his hand a new Turkish Knot, me at the helm knitting, Tracey watching our sails fill in this beautiful breeze and the sky is as blue as it could be.
Oh—and today is Michael’s birthday today! We’ve strung up fairy lights on deck, hung balloons and silliness below, and installed our new “disco lights” for a festive 04:00 watch surprise (its 01:00 right now, so we have to wait a little longer). Jasmijn made the coffee cake (you know the one), which we’re saving for a late afternoon treat.
All is well on board,
Jet
