Losing the wind

We are about to lose the wind, so we are fighting for our last miles under sail. Around 22:00h we had to turn the engine on as the wind had disappeared on us, a little earlier then expected, but then came back! And since 01:00h we can do 5 knots under sail again. There is a high pressure area moving in, or a band of small high pressure areas really, right on top of us, stretching all the way South to the Cape Verde Islands. That could be as much as 400 miles with no wind..

During the day we measured the water temperature and in the past few days the temp has been going up steadily. This afternoon we were at 24,2 degrees Celsius, surface water. Almost swimming temperature 😉 So if we do lose the wind completely, maybe a swim stop will be a good idea. The weather has been very good, sunshine, not too warm, small breeze and always a shady spot if you needed it. Sun hats and sun protection on, but sometimes also a jumper against the wind chill. Our picture of the day depicts this perfectly, picture taken by Magnus, with Brian at the helm.

The fish line has gone out again today. At one point they caught something on the hook, but it got away when they tried getting the line back in. Daniel is our head fishery for now. He has gone to the maritime academy on the Canary Islands, which included lessons on fishery and fishing. During the next few days he has promised to teach us all he knows.

Other then that, there really is not much to report, we are all just getting used to the schedule, finding the best spot to read a book or have an afternoon nap and getting to know each others background and story. The moon is full tonight and is shining on the deck like one big spotlight! Because of its strength, other stars are hardly visible, let alone satellites etc. The water is reflecting the light brightly and the lighter the wind, the more oily the ocean looks. During the day its perfectly blue, now during the night, everything is a deep shade of black. You can really lose your thoughts in views like this on calm nights like tonight’s!

All is well on board,
Jet
