Today was one of those near-perfect sailing days. The kind that makes you fall in love with the rhythm of the sea all over again. Sure, the wind was occasionally a little shy, slowing us down more than we’d like—but still, it was undeniably beautiful sailing.
Just before lunch, we began preparations for a gybe. Down came the topsails, sheets were -pulled in, and the wheel was turned to a new course: 300°. Setting the topsails again, we realized—this would be the very first time doing so on a starboard tack! With a few small adjustments, the sails were up and Tecla was charging ahead, straight for Hiva Oa.
Since then, the wind has played its usual tricks: dropping off, shifting direction, picking up again. A brief shower just passed, pushing us to a cheerful 9 knots, but we’ve mostly been cruising around 7.5 knots. If we keep the pace, we just might make landfall on the 13th before dark!
The picture of the day was claimed by Tilmann—an action shot taken while moving the preventers forward. It perfectly captured the energy of an active day under sail.
Wildlife has been sparse lately. No flying fish on deck (thankfully), and no sightings of dolphins or whales. But a frigatebird flew by yesterday—always a good sign that land is near. And last night, a small shearwater circled us under the full moon.
We were just saying how different the ship feels bathed in moonlight. It’s hard to remember those pitch-black nights when we’d crawl around the deck, calling softly so others knew we were there. Now, the full moon lights everything with an almost surreal glow. Who needs deck lights, when the moon does such a good job?
We’re pushing for speed in the coming days, and land is definitely drawing nearer.
All is well on board,
Jet
