Neptunes Blessing

Position 04’13.7N 145’41.1W – Course 340° – Speed 8,0kn

Today was a busy day! Starting in the morning with reefing the mainsail again. The wind had gradually picked up, and as we were going downwind, all was well and doable — but it increased to a force 6 and the steering got intense. So we reefed, and peace soon returned to the helmsmen.

Then at 11:15 (UTC -10) we began our celestial navigation practice. We had our theory yesterday, now it was time to stand on deck and get that bright shiny ball to the horizon. And that was one hell of a challenge! With waves rolling underneath us, the horizon bounced around often. Standing still on deck was a challenge on its own — and so was finding that mirrored ball in the sky!

Everyone took a turn holding the two sextants we have on board, feeling the difference and trying out the multi-colored shades. But again, standing still may well have been the hardest part of the exercise.

We finally got the sun down in time on one instrument and used those calculations. We were only off by 39 miles — not bad for a first time!

Then at 13:00h, we had an appointment with Neptune. Of course I was in the engine room and missed the whole thing! But apparently Neptune appeared holding a woven basket, a Honu for spiritual guidance — some say it brings luck, others say it brings memories — and a welcome word for four pollywogs, ready to enter the Shellback world of Neptune. We now have Tako (Hawaiian for octopus), a Stingray, a wind-whispering Seadragon, and a Spinner Dolphin.

I was told the ceremony was warm, the words kind, and the names well received. What more can a person wish for?

We had our ceremonial Sunday beer on the aft deck, with everyone dressing up! We forgot to take a picture, but I swear we were a fine-looking crew, if ever there was one!

Speeds are up as we race toward the doldrums… will they be as kind as Neptune was?

Picture of the day was won by Michelle with a stunning view of the deck, seen from up forward, looking back at Floris at the helm!

All is well on board,

Jet
