Northbound with a topsail speed

Position 01’39.1S 144’12.2W course 355’ speed 8kn

What an amazing day of sailing it has been! Cruising along with 7 knots most of the time and enjoying a lovely morning sunshine. Around noon the wind started to decrease somewhat and we decided it was time for a topsail. As we did have some big cumulus clouds around, I chose to set only one of them, that if we needed to shorten sail, we would only need to worry about that big one.

The setting of the sail went very fast, almost like we had done it before! But this really was the first time for our new team. It does help, that the sail was set on the portside, as the navigational lights are on starboard, and they are a thing to recon with..

After setting the sail, we were cruising with speeds around 7,4 to 7,7kn, Lovely.

We took some time to introduce everybody to some navigational skills, so that if we have time and are ready for it, we can start our Celestial Navigation.

With only 1 degree and 39 minutes to go to the equator… talk of Neptune coming for a visit have also started. For the first time ever, we have more people on board who have already crossed the equator once, so our ceremony will be shorter then usual. Lets see how Neptune responds to the crew he sees that he has already let into his realm!

During the evening some squalls have come in, so we lowered the topsail just before dinner. Just to be on the safe side. And now I am happy we did. We are doing 8 knots, just our standard sail, the breeze feels amazing, but we also have some showers around. So, easy does it.. As my dad used to say. Picture of the day was won by Bob, a 0,5 lens with topsails set.

Our miles north a dearer and dearer. Closing in on next destinations and picking up our trail where we planned it. It feels good to head north with this speed. People to see, places to go!
