Captain Gijs Sluik is a seasoned sailor with a deep-seated passion for maritime adventures. Raised in a family devoted to sailing, Gijs began his nautical journey at a young age, influenced by his parents’ love for the sea. Professionally, he embarked on his career in 2001 as a deckhand on various traditional Dutch vessels, including the Aagtje, Eenhoorn, and later the Stad Amsterdam, where he gained extensive experience as a deckhand, quartermaster, and third mate over three years .
In 2006, Gijs and his family purchased the traditional sailing vessel Tecla, transforming it into a renowned expedition charter vessel. Since then, Gijs has dedicated himself to captaining the Tecla, guiding it through some of the most challenging and remote sailing routes worldwide, including the Northwest Passage and around Cape Horn . His commitment to fast, adventurous sailing is matched by his meticulous attention to both the deck and the chartroom, ensuring each voyage is both thrilling and safe for all aboard .
Today, Gijs, along with his sister Jet and mother Jannette, continues to run the family business, offering unique sailing experiences that combine their deep maritime knowledge with a warm, welcoming atmosphere for guests. The Tecla remains a testament to their dedication, frequently exploring remote destinations and embracing the unpredictability of the sea with skill and enthusiasm.
