The Day We Caught the Fish!

After days of trying, Michael’s patience finally paid off – we caught our first fish!

The morning started quietly, with just the night watch still asleep when suddenly… BZZZRRRZZZZ! The fishing line screamed to life. Within seconds, feet rushed across the deck and a small commotion erupted at the aft. A short but spirited fight followed – and then, there it was: a beautiful striped tuna, around 60cm long, shimmering with deep blue and silver stripes. A true prize!

Later in the afternoon, the fishing line went off twice more. One fish managed to escape – a clean getaway. But the second was brought aboard: a stunning little mahi-mahi, just 40–50cm long. Too young to keep, we snapped a quick photo and gently released it back into the deep. Who knows – maybe we’ll meet again in a few years, when it’s grown into a worthy catch.

The wind has kept us guessing since last night. We expected a calm spell, but instead were treated to a fresh breeze that had us flying along at 8 knots! Later, small drizzle patches rolled in, and we slowed to 5.5–6 knots. Still, it’s excellent sailing.

This morning also brought a sail handling lesson on deck, led by Lisa. With warm sunshine and calm seas, it was the perfect setting to explore sail trim, lines, and wind direction – with caulk in hand and plenty of questions asked and answered.

The sea temperature is still cool at 16°C, but we can feel the shift – layers are coming off, the sun is stronger, and fluffy cumulus clouds are starting to appear more often. Signs are pointing toward the trade wind belt. Let’s go, Tecla!

All is well on board, Jet
