Waiting for the wind shift

Waiting is never easy. But we know it’s coming – we just have to sit through it and make the most of the now. The wind is trying to shift from West to North, then to Northeast. But it isn’t doing it in a clear, single change. No, it has been teasing us for hours, even backing Southwest briefly as a shower passed over.

The wave we are following is a little clearer. It’s coming from the Northwest, sometimes North. I trust the wave – it probably knows the wind better than I do. Patience has never been my strongest suit though, especially when I feel I can do something myself.

So we sheeted in, as the light winds shook us violently on the tops of the waves and left little to no wind on deck. At least with a close-hauled or close-reach course, we can still add some boat speed to the wind.

The mainsail remains down for now – the last watch encountered some showers with extra wind, and our 00-04 watch is just Rena and me. We’re taking it slow, waiting for the wind to truly change before we gybe and set the mainsail again.

432 miles to go in a straight line. A good distance – enough to savour the days of sailing ahead, but also clearly the last miles, and plenty of time to make them count.

Other highlights from the day: we ran a fire drill, which went smoothly thanks to our capable crew. For dinner, we had chili con carne with guacamole and pineapple on the side. Oh and first bare feet on the deck! Weather is getting warmer, although still fresh and with some rain, soon we will be in shorts!

All in all, a good day. Not too eventful, but certainly far from boring.

All is well on board,

Jet
