We have Officially Completed our Third Northwest Passage

Davis Strait

Leaving the snowy hills of Baffin behind, we set out to sea. A northerly wind was forecast to take us all the way to Nuuk, Greenland, some 700 nml to the south. And so it was. Two gybes and three days later, we have 130 nml to go before entering Ice Fjord. Yesterday at 1400 ship’s time, we crossed the Arctic Circle for the second time this trip. We did it—we made it!

4,000 nml have passed under the keel since we left Dutch Harbor. Ice along the north coast of Alaska kept us on our toes. For a while, it was not clear whether we would make it through, or when. It seems a long time ago that we were drifting among the pack one early morning. A big contrast with this evening: the same moon, but now a lumpy sea makes the Mary Dancers dance wilder. Venus is rubbing the sleep from her eyes and begins her chase after Jupiter. Orion is just on the horizon, barely visible. We are in good company, and it seems all have come out to see us safely home.

A ring of dark clouds over the stern closes the curtain on the Arctic stage. Thank you, dear Tecla and dear crew—we did it!

At the time of writing, the song Bang Bang is softly playing from the Team Czech speaker, one of Jet’s favourites. Next time, we’ll do it together again!

All is well,

Gijs
