After a small 30 hours under engine, we started picking up a breeze that was not just the breeze coming from the Cape Verde Islands, no it was a steady 3 to 4 bf wind coming from the North East. So just before dinner, we set sail and it was magical. Where we were rocking and rolling a lot under engine, we all of a sudden got a calm on board that was refreshing, the wind felt clean and cooling and the ship came to rest as we turned our hardworking scania off. That’s what sailing is all about, the moment you realize your ship is better off under canvas, your crew is happy without any sound but the rushing of water and wind and a calm settles down on board where you did not even know it was missing in the first place.

The water temperature and air temperature have shot up in the last 24 hours. During the day we reached a hight of 33 degrees celcius and the surface water was 28 degrees already. Although the weather around us seems fairly stable, the changes will start to come and the tropical downpours of rain are not very far away anymore. We are still next to the Cape Verde Islands, with Fogo almost a beam of us. We are already picking up the normal trade winds, with typical tradewind clouds, puffs of cumulus all around.

The picture of the day was a tough one again! We had to do it in the dark as we finished making dinner around 19:00h just after setting all sails. In the dark we could see the pictures very well and all of them were amazing. But we had to choose. Normally this is done by counting down from 3 and we all point at the person with the picture we most preferred. But this was going to be hard in the dark.. so we said, we would call out the name of the person we thought had the best picture.. But that turned out to be a big mess! A funny mess, but a mess all the same. So Bob turned on his flash light on his phone, which contained a beautiful picture of the Tecla, the red compass light and the stars, and we voted once more by pointing. Sadly for Bob, Andy had made an amazing panoramic shot of Santo Antao as we passed it in the morning, and so Andy won with most fingers pointing at him!
After the election, it was time for dinner, wraps with chicken stew and fresh salads to fill it up. We made the tortilla wraps ourselves, which was a challenge on its own as we had to make over 28 wraps while still rolling around under engine. But with good team work of Myrthe, Thomas, Tim and Karsten we managed to turn out a beautiful meal with delicious wraps (thanks for the recipe Johnny!).
Right now we are sailing with 8 knots, a beam reach. Although Fogo is still next to us, we can not see it, its over 70 miles away. It was nice to see land during the morning though, knowing it should be the last land for a few weeks, this also feels like a jump off point. From here we head South, heading for the equator and for the Southern Atlantic Ocean!
All well on board, Jet

Cabo Orange fica no Atlântico Norte! Logo o Amazonas deságua no Atlântico Norte e no Atlântico Sul !
